Less is More - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Tidying may be the last thing on many of our minds as we get deep into holiday territory, but with some upcoming time off from work for me, and the New Year (and the inevitable resolutions that come with it) around the corner, I know that organizing will definitely be back at the top of my to do list very soon.

A few months back I was talking to a coworker who I sometimes discuss fashion with, and somewhat out of the blue she said "Have you heard of Marie Kondo?" I hadn't, but my interest was piqued. Who was this NY Times author best selling I'd never heard of, and what was she selling?

A tidying expert and joy, in that order, ended up being the answers.

Since reading her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and then beginning her tidying method (and I say beginning because I haven't yet completed a full and thorough tidying of every category of THING I have in my home) I feel lighter, happier, and better organized. I also feel in greater control of my life and better able to both see and enjoy the things that I DO own.

More recently, I wore a 70's jumpsuit to a fun blogger beauty event. I probably wouldn't have even known I had the jumpsuit unless I'd gone through all of my clothes and cleared out what didn't spark joy.

Yes you read it right and I'll say it again, "spark joy." Because that's the only criteria she asks her readers to go by when determining whether or not to keep an item, for example an article of clothing. She actually has you go through every category of thing you could possibly have in your home (like clothes, books, toiletries, skincare samples, and more), in a very specific order, and clear out anything in each category that doesn't spark joy.

I won't spoil all the fun by summarizing the entire book, but believe me when I say that it's worth a read. There are parts that are a little "out there," like her practice of saying thank you to the clothes that have served you well, before giving them away. But this method of tidying, what she calls #KonMarie, has the power to change your life, and that's her whole philosophy. Once you tidy your entire home, and if you do it quickly (6 months or less) your whole world will change positively and dramatically.

One of the things I've definitely learned through the process is that "Less if More" and that by having less, I'm able to enjoy everything I do have. So go ahead and get the book, read it and get rid of anything that doesn't spark joy. And get ready to change your life.
